Jon Frederickson – Overcoming Resistance
Ever feel like you’re working too hard with a client and getting nowhere? You don’t need to let your client’s defenses block progress.
For the first time ever, we’re making part two of our psychotherapy skill-building audio studies public. Multimedia was previously only available for audio studies.-This audio course is for year training programs. It teaches you how quickly to identify and deal with subtle resistances from highly resistant patients. These studies will help you to understand how to communicate your feelings with patients.
How it works
This is a good practice.-Course oriented, you are the therapist asking me questions. I am your ‘patient’You will respond with defenses. You will intervene. I will then give you a suggested answer.
As we explore numerous examples of each defense, you’ll have ample practice time to learn how to recognize defenses immediately and intervene effectively. You’ll rapidly improve your assessment and intervention skills and learn to handle problems easily that would have stumped you in the past.
Defense Work You’ll Learn to Do
Protection against Feelings: When the patient resists feeling
Protections against the giving of a particular example
Differentiating between feeling and stimulus
Inviting feelings to block defenses
Blocking defenses by labeling them and inviting emotions
Protections against feelings: ambiguity, diversification and hypothetical speech. Cover words and rationalization.
Keep your eyes on the present relationship and distinguish between emotions and defenses.
There are defenses against grief
Collaboration Resistance: When the patient resists emotional closeness with the therapist
Therapists often have to deal with resistance patients because they are unable to recognize when the patient is resisting their feelings and resisting emotional closeness. These are some of the most important studies that have ever been done to help you develop these special skills. Without these skills, it is impossible to successfully treat patients who are highly resistant.
Recognizing the resistance to emotional closeness
Recognize the resistance to emotional closeness, and invite feelings
A study on endurance to determine the reasons for emotional distance and how to invite emotions.
Clarification and challenge for the resistance
Clarifying the function of defense and mobilizing the patient’s will to the task
Clarifying the defense’s price
The therapist should be able to recognize the resistance to emotional intimacy and invite feelings towards them.
Maintaining a strong focus even when there is resistance
Projection of superego

Jon Frederickson has created a superb set of audio training programmes… These recordings have added a dimension to my skill building that I have not been able to achieve through my other learning methods. I believe the key to success is in the quick introduction of the skills, and the repetition exercises. Jon Guides the listener through various therapeutic situations in an interactive fashion. Each module is explained clearly and focuses on one skill. There are many examples of each technique. Jon He then walks you through various practice sessions to help you learn and retain the skill. He helps you build your confidence and manage complexity so that it is not overwhelming. The effects were evident in my clinical practice as soon as I saw them. Jon’s clear instructions are sound bite long and easy to remember, and because of the practice runs with the tapes, I found myself able to immediately incorporate the skills within my established practice. Importantly, the recordings highlight the core ISTDP skills so succinctly that it has given me a renewed appreciation of how important it is not to rush the basics (such as clarifying the problem and the client’s will/motivation). These recordings are highly recommended to anyone interested in learning the ISTDP process. This is a great resource. Jon. These are the skills-Building guides were a tremendous help to me in learning the ISTDP technique through your concise and clear introduction to the therapeutic skill sets. I look forward to the next releases. Anthony Theuninck, United Kingdom Psychologist
The Skill-ISTDP practitioners from all levels can build audio courses. This is a powerful learning tool. The exercises are extremely well designed, the learning goals and how you get there are clearly defined. Jon Frederickson She is, as usual, an inspirational teacher. The skill is highly recommended.-Audio course construction
Again, thank you. Jon!

I would like to say thank you Jon Frederickson Thank you for making this audio course accessible. Even though I’ve been reading ISTDP literature for three years and have been part of a core study group, the audio course was still a great learning experience. It taught me how to manage defenses that patients are often (and unconsciously) creating. Jon acts as the patient in role-The listener responds by playing and then waiting. Then Jon Gives a response that is likely to be effective. My competence in ISTDP was enhanced by repetition and drill.

I’m so glad that I purchased these skill building audio recordings. For several years I have been seeking guidance as to how to work around patients’ defenses to help them tap into their emotions. The techniques I sought were not addressed by the psychologists and books I have read. Jon These recordings contain addresses. These are simple concepts, but I had never considered them before. They are very important. For example, you ask a patient how her father’s behavior made her feel and she responds “It made me feel disappointed.” That’s actually not a feeling, that’s what happened to her, her father disappointed her. So you can’t just take that as the answer to how that made her feel. You’ve got to dig deeper and he teaches you how.
These are also available in audio format, so you can save them to your iPod. I listened to three hours of them the other day while I was painting my house. It made it go by much faster and helped me learn a lot. They are something I will be able to listen to over and over to cement the ideas. I look forward to the next set of recordings.
