Youtube, Facebook and other social media platforms have completely eliminated the need to create middlemen.-men. Today, this is the first time in the history of the music business, talented & hard-Musicians can be successful WITHOUT a label, but they are more likely to achieve greater success with one.

If you’re still trying to get a record deal, let me quickly break down the pros and cons for you:

Pros

They have capital $ available to invest

This is rapidly changing! To validate labels, many labels ask you to crowdfund your projects. “demand” and also so they don’t’ have to front it!)

They are connected

Many labels are well-known and have the connections to get you into the right festivals or special promotions. There are ways around this so that you don’t need a label, though.

Maximum Exposure

This assumes that the label does a great job marketing! The The truth is that digital marketing practices are lacking in many labels. We’ve observed a complete lack of basic marketing knowledge in some of the most popular labels around. We believe that SMA is still in the dinosaur age based on what they have shown us.

You have to repay every $ that is invested in you!

And usually that involves some serious terms….. and that’s where you end up trading your time for dollars, by having to tour and tour and tour just to make back that load. You don’t make much money at all until that loan is paid back…. if that even happens!

You can spend all this time on your music, and the label can hear what you’re working on and decide it doesn’t like the direction you’re going in.

They don’t always deliver on their promises

They might not actually do everything they say they’ll do for your music career. I’ve met many artists who were so disappointed with what they thought was a good deal, only to find out it doesn’t do diddly squat.

You won’t make that much money after all

The labels take such a huge cut that you’re rarely going to be able to make a real living doing music with them. Unless you’re the next big superstar (and let’s be realistic: most of us are not superstars — we’re everyday artists doing our thing and we want to share it with the world) it’s not even worth signing away the little you’d be making!

Myth #2

Independent musicians can’t make money

Because we now live in a streaming, file-based world, people believe this myth.-sharing era. Youtube, radio and digital formats have made it seem like no one buys music anymore. It’s impossible to believe that this could be farther from the truth. The reality is consumers love to consume the music & products they love in multiple formats. 

The highest-earning revenue stream for musicians worldwide is physical music and merchandise. Streaming is a great way to enhance this relationship and it plays a huge role in our sales today. The key is to have a strategic plan that incorporates ALL streams of income, including digital & physical formats.

I built a multiple six-She was able to make a career out of music, without labels or licensing deals, because she understood that people still buy music from artists they support.-Fans who are hardcore fans want everything, even all the merchandise!

If you think you need millions of fans to accomplish your dreams, you’re wrong. My last crowdfunding campaign raised over $90,000. It took me 30 days to raise the money with only 1500 fans. Only be yourself. “niche-famous” To a select group of fans who are crazy about your music.

Myth #3

To be successful, you must travel.

The Third myth: You must play or tour live …. as many gigs are possible to gain exposure.

This one, I get. I used to believe that I HAD to tour in order to be successful, to sell any music, to get exposure… and it’s just what musicians did!

Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with touring. …. Once you realize the true cost of touring, you will see how little artists actually make and that the payoff isn’t as good as it once was. Even the most popular bands can’t afford to tour. written About 90% of tours fail to break even and many lose money even on successful tours. Although touring is a great thing, 90% of bands will never make it a full-time job.-You can live your life with this method.

If your reason for touring is to shake hands and get your name out there, I can tell you there are FAR more effective ways to do this… and on a GLOBAL SCALE that pales in comparison to playing for 20 people in a dive bar (who are all scrolling on their phones anyway).

I’m too old/fat/ugly/fill-In-The-Blank to have a career in music

Yes, that was what I thought. After I had kids I certainly didn’t fit the supermodel package I used to see on MTV and I thought no one would take me seriously. The good news is more than ever, people want to connect with music that is meaningful to them, and they don’t care what you look like or how old you are. Just look at shows like America’s Got Talent or The Voice and you can see amazing people of all ages and ethnicities — the crowds love all of them! I’m living proof that even after having 5 kids and well into my 30’s — you can still build a music career of your dreams. I’m living the dream and I don’t have to hold back because of a limiting belief I used to have.

Myth #5

Good music is all you need

I agree 100% that good music is the absolute foundation and heart of why we’re here. Bad or mediocre music will not get you anywhere. Your music has to be good. It should stand out. It should be exceptional. Now, having said that, I’ve noticed there’s often a false mentality that goes along with this. It sounds like this.

“In order to become successful, you have to eat, sleep, and breathe your music 24/7. Play anywhere and everywhere 7 days a week. Do this for 5-10 years and then you MIGHT get noticed. And any other way is BS.”

This was a Facebook comment! But …. this was the OLD way. This was the Old Music Industry. That’s the old-It will limit your ability to think like a school student now.

We are now in what I call “The New Music Industry”. This is a new era of opportunity! In an instant, we have never before had such access to people in any country anywhere in the world. This is NEW.

Never before was it possible to write a song and upload it to the Internet, then go to sleep …… A stranger in another part of the world will discover you while you are asleep …., buy your song, and become your fan. That’s NEW.

It’s a great time for musicians old and new. There’s actually a market for EVERYTHING.

Any kind of music is welcome. Someone somewhere is searching for the most obscure niche music and wants to come across what you’ve just created.

Although the internet may seem vast, it is ….. You can make the most of this incredible opportunity to connect with people who are looking for your music.

Your efforts have not brought you anywhere
