One of my favorite expressions of feminine spirituality, for me, is the story of Parvati and Shiva. Their story was the reason I fell in love with it almost 30 years ago and has been a constant part of my life ever since.
Parvati’s story offers us a radical alternative to the austerity of so-called “masculine” spirituality. Traditionally, the spiritual journey has often been described as a path for solitary heroes —Buddha renouncing the world, Jesus leaving home and family to go into the desert and battle delusion.

Shiva is an ascetic, a meditation yogi. Parvati charms Shiva when he first meets her. He refuses to let his meditation be interrupted. Parvati soon realizes that he must match her spiritual power in order to win her love.

Defying her parents, Parvati goes into the forest and turns herself into the world’s greatest yogini, as Siva is the world’s greatest yogi. Parvati’s intense focus attracts Shiva, and he returns from meditation to take her into his arms. They have two wonderful sons, Ganesha (Goddess) and Kartikeyya (Goddess).
Parvati is the goddess that women in India pray to when looking for the perfect man.
