Description:
In traumatized couples, talking about 'what happened' often evokes more conflict than empathy and does not alter their habitual trauma-Similar animal defense survival reactions of fight, flight. freeze. submission or cry for help. It is possible to reduce the use of words and blame by teaching couples how to be more aware of their bodies. In addition, somatic interventions regulate the body and nervous system, which reduces each partner's sense of threat. Each partner can learn the ability to simultaneously protect and open the heart, creating a sense safety. for Self and others
Educational Objectives
- Identify patterns that increase or decrease activation of animal defense survival reactions.
- Demonstrate understanding of increasing couples’ ability to observe their somatic communication.
- Incorporate somatic interventions in couples treatment.

Janina Fisher, PhD He is a Clinical Psychologist licensed by the State of California and an Instructor at Trauma Center, an Outpatient Clinic and Research Center founded by Bessel van den Kolk. You are now known for Her expertise as a therapist/consultant is what made her past president for the New England Society for The Treatment Trauma and Dissociation, an EMDR International Association Credit Provider and a faculty member, the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute and a former Harvard Medical School instructor. Dr. Fisher has been invited to speak at the Cape Cod Institute and Harvard Medical School Conference Series, as well as the EMDR International Association Annual Conference, University of Wisconsin and University of Westminster in London. He is also a member of the Psychotraumatology Institute of Europa and the Esalen Institute. Dr. Fisher lectures on and teaches internationally on topics related the integration of treatment and research, as well as how to integrate these newer trauma treatment paradigms within traditional therapeutic approaches.
