Effective Communication Skills
Talking is something that you do every day. Talking is a habit that shapes your life. Many of your decisions are made by talking. It could be that you’re in a restaurant and ask for a special substitution. You might also urge a service manager or waiter to complete your car faster. Perhaps you are trying to improve your co-operation at work.

There is no way to avoid miscommunications, regardless of the reason you meet face-to-face. How you perceive your workplace and how well you communicate who you are is a key factor in your friendships, romantic relationships and daily interactions. Research shows that being able to use your conversational skills effectively in this arena can make you happier, more productive, and less stressed.

However, the truth is that we don’t know as much as we should about how conversation works. This can be true whether it’s in the office or at home. Each party often has completely different perceptions of what the words, gestures, and messages are trying to convey. Not only that, but most people aren’t as skilled at making these conversations work for them. Even though we may be more adept at it than the average person we still lose the opportunity to make the conversation even better.
Effective Communication Skills is your chance to learn more about how you communicate verbally, the common problems you can encounter in doing so, and how you can improve your own effectiveness—especially by overcoming the psychological and biological hard-wiring that too often gets in the way.
24 mind-opening lectures by Professor Dalton Kehoe from Canada’s York University. This exploration of the truth behind any conversation that you are part of will be based on more than 40 years of experience as an author, teacher and successful business consultant.
These are the techniques to make your success more likely Communication
Professor Kehoe draws on years of research to reveal the science behind communication skills. He offers practical methods for communicating effectively in situations of tension and conflict.
He explains the conversational roadblocks we all encounter every day—many of them driven by culturally ingrained and biological processes that operate automatically in most situations—and offers techniques for eliminating them. Every technique he shares has been successful and effective in the most challenging environments of all: at home, at work, and in other social settings where you live, play, and work.
You can learn
How early cultural learning and deeply rooted patterns of reaction in the unconscious mind can affect your perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about others and how they impact your ability to communicate effectively.
How your self-image develops through everyday conversation in your childhood. The ways your subconscious is designed to protect and sustain your self-esteem and shape how you think and talk about others for the rest your life.
the specific styles of talking you use in most situations, including different types of control talk—the unproductive and needlessly aggressive mode that almost always dooms a conversation to a fatal downward spiral—and the more desirable alternative of dialogue talk.
It will be clear that the former can help to build bridges between people who have very different views on a situation. They allow them to solve their differences without being bullied, demeaning or humiliated.
As important, you will also learn the basics and art of listening.
Active listening: The Secret to Success
Professor Kehoe believes that active listening, when done well, is the only aspect to conversation that engages all aspects of effective talking. These include

   mindful attention, not only to what you’re experiencing outside, but also to what you’re experiencing inside, a dual focus that requires conscious effort and thus makes the listening active instead of passive;
A positive attitude that values the contribution, situation, value and worth of the person you are talking to;
A willingness to metacommunicate, to look back and see the conversation objectively and to discuss it as necessary.
Although Professor Kehoe recognizes that listening to others is not natural for many people, and that it must be practiced and learned, he believes that it rewards those who make the effort. It’s the only way to talk that can solve problems and improve relationships. It’s the most important purpose of all talking, at work or at home.
It is not common to need to learn new ways to talk and listen. Many of our cultural habits have been passed down to us as children. Others are the result of biological or psychological processes that operate automatically. They allow us to quickly react to situations when we simply don’t have the time or energy to plan and execute a course of actions, as well as freeing our conscious attention for other matters.
These lectures show that even though learned behaviors and automatic responses can be useful in certain situations, they can cause extraordinary difficulties when it is time to have a productive conversation. For example, defensive reactions that are designed to protect self-esteem can be very detrimental in the resolution of marital disputes. An adrenaline-fueled one. “fight-or-flight” Answering a supervisor’s stressful question does not always lead to a satisfactory workplace solution.
