Description
Description:
In the distant past, people would be shocked to see women as friends. It would also surprise those in some parts of the globe where men friendship is highly valued. However, Americans are more likely to say that women have more friends today than men. I shall examine the ingredients that seem basic to women’s friendships and suggest ways in which friendships between women (and between women and men) may be the saving grace in our present lives. I will also be discussing friendship as it is understood in western tradition since Aristotle. What are the advantages of friendship? Can you live well with no friends? What can women take from male friendships and what can men from female friendships?
Educational Objectives
- Discussion of female friendships from historical perspectives
- Consider the role of friendship in mental well-being.
- Discuss what men can learn about female friendships and how women can benefit from male friendships.
