When you are having a good day, you know. “That Moment”That one thing that you have a clear and vivid memory of that has changed your life in a profound way. My experience was unusually cool in the early summer when I was on a college tour.
I was a senior in high school at the time.-In the honored ritual of Ignoring The Willes Of My Parents, I blow off my parents’ recommended college choice. They wanted me to remain in SoCal. I was attracted to the film school program at one college in New Mexico. When I first walked on campus, I was immediately aware of a music forum. It was a sort of open mic, and I was able to hear different music majors jamming.
Then, what happened NEXT truly blew my mind…
It was then that the music education teachers from the school got on the stage. I was shocked to see that it wasn’t you. “normal” A collection of college professors. There were no tweedy jackets or leather patches at the elbows. I saw lots of bell bottoms, long hair and corduroy jackets. It was what I heard next that really changed my life. They rocked so hard that I couldn’t believe their actions! My jaw dropped. It was a shock to hear all the screaming and handclapping of students.
This …. is what I wanted in a college! That is what I was looking for in a college. This was all I needed. It’s over. Give me the pen, I’m signed up. This is where I will go to school. What do you know? It was the best decision that I made.
Let me now tell where I’m going with this story
Chris Sherland, a cool young man in his 20s, was one of my school’s teachers. His father was from L.A. and it took only a few notes to see that he could shred.
I will cut to the chase: he wanted music theory to be taught to me. It was something I was afraid of, but I knew it was necessary. “necessary evil” Music education. I was prepared for anything, but the next few months changed everything.
The teacher sat down with me and said: “Marty, who inspires you?”
“Jimi Hendrix,” I said, “because his playing crosses all genres.”
“Okay, that’s cool,” He stated. “Now check this out…”
He took out his guitar and began to play one of Jimi’s most famous licks. Then, he explained the scale, and more importantly, why it made such a difference to millions of music lovers like me. This music theory stuff can give you a map to your audience’s hearts. It will show you which chord and note combinations produce the highest emotional response for each listener.
That was so amazing! It was so amazing that I could now recreate it in countless other combinations. He also showed me some other aspects of music theory, which, when paired with the Hendrix licks that I liked, transformed the way I approach the guitar.
It was like being given the key to a vault full of secrets about guitars that I could access at any moment. No matter why you’ve shied away, guitar theory is something you don’t even know you are missing.
It’s a bit frustrating to me that music theory is not being taught correctly. “missing piece” It is the only way to be a complete guitarist for those who have not yet achieved their goals.

Yesterday, I was speaking to one of my students and he asked when I first started playing guitar. Wow, those are some great memories. When I was 13, I had my first real lesson at a local store for the guitar.
To make a long story brief, the teacher made me do 1 note scales that sounded like nursery rhymes. After a few painful lessons, my dreams of becoming a shredding RockStar came crashing down.
A few years later, I found myself in a band with friends playing harmonica. I was amazed to see the men having fun on their guitars, playing our favorite songs with only a few chord shapes. This is what I had always wanted to do. The guys taught me basic rhythms and chords, and I was off like an astronaut.
It’s here, 16 years later. And I can tell you, that lesson in that little guitar shop was a life-changing one.
Why? Because it is my absolute goal to NEVER BORE a student to quit this amazing instrument!
