Aikido can also be used as a defensive tool. This means that practitioners learn to use their attackers’ aggression and power against them. This can be done with throws, joint lock (especially of the standing variety), or pins.

Aikido can be learned by practicing pre-arranged forms or katas for two people. One person is the attacker in teaching (uke), and the other uses aikido techniques (nage) to subdue their attacker. You should note that many of the strikes that are practiced in defense against seem to resemble movements of a sword. This indicates that aikido was able to defend the mind with weapons in the past.
