Psychobiologically oriented couple therapists know that intersubjective and phenomenological processes in primary attachment relationships are heavily dependent on fast-acting implicit memory systems. Partners in a relationship are often unable to understand each other’s actions and why they are doing them. As a result, they create meaning from their lack of understanding. In order to avoid losing their partners, couple therapy partners may have secret agendas or use deception. The couple therapist must find out who the partners are, their true desires, and what they’re up to in the first session. In In this workshop, we will accept that couple therapy can be deceitful. We will also learn how to use specialized techniques and tools to help our partners clear their minds and clarify their goals in order to improve their functioning.
Educational Objectives
- At least four behavioral indicators of deception are required.
- To be able at least to use three interventions to bring deception into the open.
- To be able identify somatic markers that are inconsistent with partner narratives.
