Irvin Cornthwaite was a trade chemist.. Irvin spent most of his adult life creating compounds in his early 50s. for Construction industry
Irvin came up with an idea in 2004. Perhaps he could help builders save money and time by sharing his knowledge on construction compounds. Give them a “missing manual” So to speak for The products they used every single day.
Problem is, Irvin wasn’t a businessman but a chemicalist.. He hired help. In addition to learning everything he could, he also hired some help. After nearly four months of work, and some very long nights he finally had a website and his first manual. He intended to sell it for $200.
The Early Results
Irvin made $34,000 in his first year of online sales. Wonderful! for someone just starting out, it wasn’t nearly enough to replace his full-Time salary as a chemist. Irvin lost track of the site over time, spending less and less time there. He eventually gave up on it.
This was just the beginning for 10 years, as Irvin’s website sat untouched. However, it was still making sales. Irvin actually continued to make an average of $21,000 per calendar year from the website.
An Expensive Lesson
Irvin realized that he needed to do something about his neglected website in 2015 as retirement was fast approaching.. To give the website a new lease of life, he hired a local marketer to help. Irvin was given a new website by the marketing firm, which cost $15,000 and included upsells, a sales funnel, and fancy videos.
His sales immediately plummeted 50%. Then, after six months of adjustments, changes, and re-His sales were only half as high as they had been in the past, despite his designs. Irvin was dismayed by the results and switched back to the old website. He did. Sales doubled immediatelyIt’s like going back to the place they were always.
Stuck with a site that worked but was old and outdated…and a new, expensive site that didn’t work…Irvin decided to do some experimenting. Irvin used a very simple experiment for his experiment. He used one of the pieces from his old website and then plugged it into his new site. That’s all he did. He then put the updated website online. This time however, his sales didn’t drop by 50%. Instead, they actually doubled yet again…Up to $40,000 per year.
The Secret Right Under Your Nose
What was it about Irvin’s old site that generated twice as many sales as his new site? And what specific piece did he then take from the old site and add to the new…which doubled his sales once more?
It was the sales pitch.. Particularly, a sales pitch that utilized a story. The story of a builder who had used Irvin’s manual. His market resonated with the story. His potential customers could relate. A story that made them buy.
I’m the guy who wrote that story for Irvin. I was the “help” He was hired in 2004. Irvin shared this story with me recently over Skype (where I laughed that I should have charged more).
It shut down one part of your brain, and turns on another.. When that happened, you began to pay more attention. That’s how I explain it.
Princeton University neurologists offer a more scientific explanation.. Let me explain. They compared brain activity of people telling stories and people listening to stories in one of their studies. The scans showed that the brains of people listening to stories begin to mimic the brains of those who are telling them. The storyteller is able to control the minds of his/her audience, in other words.
The researchers also discovered that stories can trigger a specific area of the brain to light up.. It’s the area of your brain which allows you to anticipate what is going to happen next. And this area only becomes active when you’re completely engaged in an activity, when your attention is focused on only one thing. This hyperactivity is triggered by stories, it turns out.-Automatic attention to us
Over 350 studies in areas such as cognitive science, neural psychology, and brain development have all confirmed this fact.. Stories are predisposed to positive responses in the brain. Stories free our brains from the autopilot.-pilot mode. These forces us to pay full attention almost instantly.
But it gets better.

I’ve long known this from my 20 years of experience in developing and selling products online. It’s the one indisputable truth I’ve learned; that storytelling allows you to sell more products, for You can make more money.
But it wasn’t until a few years ago that another study finally provided the science to back this up. It was a six-month study that was both simple and fascinating…involving eBay and garage sales.
100 items were randomly purchased at garage sales in the study.. On average, each item costs just $1.25.

And that’s the power of storytelling. This not only makes people more interested in your products, but also makes them more attractive. This makes them more valuable. This makes them more desirable and encourages people to purchase them at higher prices.
But There’s One Big Problem

The first is that people think they can’t tell stories. Or don’t know how. Or can’t imagine how they’d ever craft a story about their boring product, service or business. So they look for help…they look for Someone to teach them.
