Deborah Niemann – Goats 101
This class is for you, whether you already have a few pet wethers or are thinking of adding a few milkers to your family.
What nutrients do your goats require?
Are you concerned that your goats might freeze in the winter?
You may have heard that goats can be difficult to fence in. Perhaps you have experienced it yourself!
Do pedigrees confuse you?
Are you able to tell when your goats should be dewormed?
What is the normal behavior of goats?
You’ll find the answers to these questions and many others in this course. This course will teach you about the basics of goat care, including how to identify parasites, what to do if your goat is sick, how to treat it, how to house and fence them, and when to call the vet. This information is more than I learned in a decade. In my early years of learning, I spent hundreds of dollars on things that I didn’t need. It’s not necessary to have a large cabinet filled with goat gadgets and supplements. There is no need to dosing your goat every week or monthly. You can maintain a healthy herd with good nutrition and proper management.
You can be confident that your goats will flourish if they are fed properly and without routine use of any chemical dewormers or other drugs.
You can save money by not purchasing unnecessary supplies, equipment, or supplements.
Don’t waste your time searching the Internet for opinions or outdated information.

“In 2010, when I first considered getting goats, I was fortunate to find Deborah’s goat group, NigerianDwarf Goats.ning.com. I spent many hours there reading through the archives and learned a lot. Being able to freely ask questions was extremely helpful. Since then, I have joined various facebook groups, but this site is always my go-to site for accurate answers and the best up-to-date information. Deborah is very much abreast on the latest information which is so very important.”

In the five years prior to having goats, it was heartache after heartache. By the age of three, all our bucks had died. They either didn’t fall pregnant or gave birth before their due date. We had to deal with resistance to dewormers. Everything was learned the hard way. The goats had taken our hearts and we couldn’t let go. We worked out what we had to do and it was successful. We made the same mistakes as we did, so there’s no reason anyone else should make them. It’s easy to raise goats if you have the right information.
There is so much information online that it is difficult for new goat owners not to see what is up-to-date and what should have disappeared ten years ago. As a new goat owner, I hear that this is the most frustrating part of my job. They have to sort through all the information and find out what is correct and current. That’s why this course was created. You will find out the current state of things and what people thought in the past, along with where some of those old recommendations originated.
Importantly, I realize that not everyone will find the same results. I am not going to tell anyone to do the same thing I did. I’ll tell you what goats really need and how to identify when they aren’t getting it. And what you can do to make things better. This will give you a solid understanding of how to keep your goats happy and healthy.
