What is the “backdoor” to playing the piano?
Chords.
Chords can be a gateway to the world of playing the piano without needing to pass through the front door. Chords can be used to quickly understand and play music without any formal training.
If you have the money and time, formal training is acceptable. Most adults don’t want their piano playing to be delayed. I took lessons when I was a kid, but found it boring. I couldn’t even play the written music as it was written. I had no idea what to do without the sheet music. I stopped playing the piano until that incident. However, I was able to play in a school band shortly thereafter. I needed to quickly learn chords. I sent $2. Popular Mechanics had a chart for chords. I received it within hours and was playing the Dm7 chord with the C6 chord with my left hand, while the tune was being played with my right. You can’t get enough! Within a matter of weeks, I was able play dozens songs with chords. My sight became even more evident.-My reading speed was also greatly improved, as I now understood the printed pages!
Instead of going through the front door, I went through the backdoor and now I love what I used to hate. Why? Because I now understand the meaning of chords and how they are constructed. I finally completed my Masters Degree. It was easy because I had all the knowledge I had about music theory and harmony through playing and understanding chords.
