Jon Dykstra – Content Site Autopilot
I once had to manage many balls while growing my online publishing company (a fancy name for my niche website business). As the site’s traffic and profits increased, I realized that two things were necessary to fuel that growth.
=> Systems; and
=> Help from other people.
I was a complete novice when I hired my first VA. Although it was helpful, I soon realized that delegation required systems. Without systems, I wouldn’t be able to leave my sites.
I spent the next two years hiring more people, outsourcing more content, and most importantly, improving my systems and workflow to ensure that quality increased and output increased.
The following are my systems:
=> Tracking processes,
=> Organizational structure (defined roles),
=> Fast training methods,
=> Proven hiring processes,
=> Clear employee expectations, and
=> Checklists and templates,
Over time, I built all of this and then tweaked it. Now I have complete systems that manage my workflow. I have been able to rapidly grow my niche site.
What do I do now?
While I could save some money and do most of the work myself, delegating and letting my workflow do its job frees me up for testing new traffic sources and monetization options.
IMO, testing is an important part of growing an internet business. Every week new technologies, traffic sources and methods are introduced.
My entire team can be paid for by increasing traffic 10% or $5 RPM. If I manage to do that just a few times a year, it will be worth all my hard work. It’s a joy to be creative and implement new ideas.
However, this is not the main reason to establish systems and a team for your business as it grows.
The truth is that you can’t have a company if it runs without your involvement. You have a job. If you love the work, that’s a good thing. But if you want to start a large online publishing enterprise, you must plan, create, and maintain systems that will allow you to manage your output.
