Milton H. Erickson, MD, American psychiatrist who specialized on medical hypnosis, family therapy, and mental health. He was the founding president of American Society for Clinical Hypnosis. He is known for his creative approach to the unconscious mind and for providing solutions.-generating.
Erickson had severe disabilities for much of his adult life. He was 17 when he contracted Polio, which left him paralysed and almost blind. While recovering in bed, almost entirely lame and unable to speak, he became strongly aware of the significance of nonverbal communication – body language, tone of voice, and the way that these nonverbal expressions often directly contradicted the verbal ones. He also began to have “body memories&He was able to see the muscle activity in his own body. He began to focus on these memories and slowly regained control over his body until he could talk again. His doctor suggested that he exercise his upper body only so Milton Erickson set out to canoe 1,000 miles to increase his strength so he could attend college. He was challenged, but he was able, with the help of a cane, to walk again after his adventure.
Ericksonian hypnosis is different from traditional hypnosis in many ways. The traditional concept of hypnosis was that the therapist would give standardized instructions to a patient. Ericksonian Hypnosis emphasizes the therapeutic relationship, purposeful engagement with the inner resources and experience of the subject. The practice of hypnotherapy was revolutionized by Dr. Erickson. by Many original ideas and communication patterns were brought together in the field.
Erickson’s hypnotic outlook was the inspiration for many of his innovative psychotherapeutic methods that he used in treating individuals, couples, or families. He was the world’s most famous hypnotist.&Dr. Erickson was the leading hypnotherapist in the country. He used formal hypnosis only once.-Fiveth of his cases are in clinical practice.
Dr. Erickson made a significant shift in psychotherapy today. Ericksonian principles are now mainstreamed in modern practice.
