- They try to do all this stuff, and do it all poorly. They become stressed because nothing seems to be working. They don’t know where to turn next. (They then go to marketing blogs to feel more confident. “the answer is still out there.”)

On a company level, either none of the tactics get traction or if they do, there’s no system to scale them up.

Tactical Maneuver Hell is a waste of time and energy. How can I tell? It was a solitary job at my retail store, and I stayed there for over a year as growth stagnated.
I was fed up after spending over a year investing in every traffic strategy imaginable. I stopped and thought about acquisition. That was what I saw. New customer acquisition is possible only with two components:
- Traffic
- Conversion
You’ve got to drive traffic to your site. Convert that traffic into customers.
That’s it.
I realized I was blindly following #1 and completely neglecting #2.

Boom. My retailer’s conversion rate doubled in 2005 when I used this method. It has been refined at more than ten retailers since then.
