Ryan Lee – DotComXpo
I decided to try something new and take a chance this week. Although it was a calculated risk, it was still an interesting risk.
The goal: To see if it’s possible to run an “Internet marketing” Event (also called DotComXpoIt is possible to have a conference without speakers and still keep it affordable for everyone (and profitable for me, the producer).).
There were some challenges…
1. High?-Are speakers of calibre willing to present content and not sell from the stage?
2. Could I find sponsors to help me offset my production expenses?
3. Could I make? “the numbers” work?
4. Is this the type of event that people would be willing to travel to, pay up to $1,000, and take their family with them?
THE RESULTS
There were two ways to measure the success of DCX… The feedback forms and the bank balance.
First, let’s talk about Feedback forms. I’ve been doing live events for over 15 years (starting when I used to work at Blythedale Children’s Hospital) and I have never had feedback be so strong. Not even close.
When asked how they would rate DCX, nearly everyone answered with a 9. The average score was actually 9.36. There were four 8s, and one was due to the sheer number of sessions available. “tactical labes” One was the slow hotel WiFi, the other was the problem with the internet at the hotel. But that was it. Almost all forms had phrases similar to JoEllen Marks saying “this event was truly LIFE CHANGING” Ross Bowring saying “these strategies will add tens, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to my client’s bottom lines”.
In the past, I’d always have up to 10% of the people who didn’t love the event, it’s just the nature of the business. You will never please everyone… but this year was different. A crowd of hundreds gave me positive feedback. It was almost unheard-of.
The speakers were praised by the attendees in overwhelming numbers. They also praised the session’s value, the positive energy and the professionalism of the crowd.-Environment for pitch.
Next, I looked the numbers… because numbers never lie. After taking into account sponsors, registration fees, and bookstore sales, it was a 6-figure weekend after expenses.
Let’s be real, DCX Approximately 30% less than the previous year.-Front income is higher than other events in which I allowed speakers “pitch”. DCX registration was more expensive (other events were either free or $199), but some speakers could make $100K to $100K in just an hour. This resulted in more registration revenue, but lower total sales volume.
But I am confident that the goodwill gained will pay off in long-term. The event will bring in many new friends. They will also tell their friends about me and my companies. The event should generate a lot of buzz, which will lead to thousands of copies of the videos being sold (which will likely outweigh the less revenue generated from the actual event).
Here’s a thread on FB by Seth Larrabee all about DCX. He even plugged it FounderFly (I didn’t post the entire thread but other people said things like “I’m in!” – so it is making sales).
