Shane Melaugh – Course Craft
Are you looking to start an online business that will bring you both income and freedom?
Do you want to build a company that is proud of you, gives you satisfaction, and contributes value to the wider world?
This message is for YOU.
I’m Shane MelaughThrive Themes’ CEO is.
I’ve created and launched several 6- and 7-Figure businesses built from scratch over the past 10 years.
I’m going to reveal to you what is hands down the best online business model for creating income and personal freedom, in 2019 and beyond:
Online courses can be created and sold.
You want real value.-A sustainable, based business. If you are tired of trying to get your hands on every online marketing trend, then an online course might be the best option.
In fact, let’s get more specific: I want to show you how you can create an online course that sells for $200… and sell on average, 1 of them per day.
One thing can be sold per day. It’s doable. It doesn’t require a massive audience or floods of traffic.
That’s the beauty of selling an online course at this price point. It’s the sweet spot. And it’s something you can do, even in a tiny niche and still be successful.
If that thing you sell is a $200 course that you created yourself and that you’re selling on your own platform (no predatory fees from 3rd-Parties involved) then the 1 sales per day become your ticket to freedom.
Why does a Software Guy talk about Online Courses
You might be surprised to hear that online courses are my favorite online business model. After all, I’m best known for founding Thrive Themes – a software company.
But here’s the thing: Thrive Themes would have never happened if I didn’t have experience selling online courses, first. To make the money to launch Thrive Themes I sold online courses. My online course business helped me gain marketing and sales expertise. Thrive themes would have failed without it.
Software businesses are still more labor-intensive than online courses, but they can be made for a lot less money.
Unless you’re a veteran of online marketing, I don’t recommend starting a software business.
Speaking of which: most online entrepreneurs keep making the same mistakes…
Stop Working Your Butt Off for Pennies…
Because we all want to escape the 9, we all get involved in online marketing.-To-5 and you will be free!
Yet, how is it possible that so many of us chase one fad after the other? Follow the latest shiny object, the next! “opportunity”. The next promise is a shortcut to easy cash.
It’s okay to admit it, we’re all guilty of doing this.
They are the reality “opportunities” isn’t so glorious, is it?
Truth is, we end up spending our pennies on the side.
We spend time creating keyword-optimized articles to grow our niche websites. We hope to get some traffic, so we can get some clicks on our ads… only to earn something like $0.14 for a click?
Or what about referring sales to Amazon, building out review sites, using all kinds of plugins and tools… to earn 6% on the sale of a toothbrush and some toilet paper?!
Or maybe we’re spamming cheaply generated Kindle books all over Amazon for $2 a pop… or drop-shipping some stuff from a Chinese factory via FBA, competing against the 327 other people trying to sell the same product, in the same category, made by the same factory…
Or maybe do all this work to build an audience and a blog and get some traffic and build a mailing list and then… recommend some affiliate product for maybe $20-$50 per sale.

I don’t know about you, but I feel exhausted just from typing that out.
And it gets worse…
The “Easy” Chances can be hard and risky.
You see, all of what I have described was my experience at one time. I learned how to play the system. I understood how to get traffic, get clicks, send people off via ads and links, and how to make some money.
It is quite a large sum of money at once.
But eventually, I lost most of my sites and earnings in a Google Slap™… and really, I wasn’t sad about it. I’m glad those websites don’t exist anymore. They were trash. They had nothing I could be proud about. I felt like apologizing for people who found my sites while looking for answers.
Imagine how much you can do with this! “anything to make money” There is a lot of crap out there. YouTubers are desperate to stir up controversy and drama, and do terrible fakes. “pranks”Just for views. “Influencers” Showing off their fake lifestyles and posing for brand products in order to make some money. Scrolling through this stupid stuff has anyone ever seen any real value?
And trust me, I’m not being holier-More than-thou, here. I made shallow, just-For-The-At one point, money can also be valueless content.
What it Feels Like To Finally Do Something Real
I decided to also try my hand at creating ebooks, and online courses. I shared my knowledge, packaged it up and made it available for sales.
And let me tell you: the difference between selling online courses and other business models I’d tried was like night and day!
I quickly learnt that it’s WAY easier to sell your own product to your audience than to get ad clicks or sell someone else’s product (as an affiliate). I made more money pretty quickly.
It wasn’t just that, I also got to know my clients. They actually liked me and thanked me for the product I’d created! They spoke about how they had learned something new and how it was a positive change for them. AND… they wanted me to create more products – they wanted to learn more from me.
They wanted to know if I would be interested in buying more things. “tricking” People click on my ads on crappy niche websites.
I didn’t look back. From that day on, I was driven to create useful products for people. I sold online courses, later SaaS products and WordPress software. But the principle was the same:
Make something of real value, and then sell it to people who make a difference.
It’s an honest, fair value exchange. I love it!
And don’t just take my word for it. I’m not the only one who thinks online courses are the best.
But maybe this isn’t news to you. Maybe, right now, you’re thinking:
“Shane, I’m trying to do what you’re describing. I’m creating real value, trying to sell my expertise… and it’s not working.”
Maybe you’ve been reading so far and rolling your eyes. “Tell me something I don’t know yet.”
Maybe you’ve been creating real value already. You are adamant about creating useful, original content. Maybe you’re already selling your expertise in some form like ebooks, coaching, online courses… and you’re still struggling to get anywhere.
Many coaches have also the ability to use this skill. “chasing pennies” They undervalue themselves, and end up working too hard for little reward. Then you find yourself in a different job.-Hours-For-dollars treadmill.
You might feel that coaching is best done in person. You can’t translate that into a course. You’re right: coaching isn’t the same as a course. You can turn the knowledge and experience you have gained as a coach into an online course that is useful and valuable.
Don’t know how to do that? You don’t know how to do that?
That’s what you get with the Course Craft system!
Are you already a pro at information products?
Simply creating an online course doesn’t magically lead to success, of course. Udemy has thousands of course creators who struggle to make a living.
What I’m talking about here isn’t just the principle of turning your expertise into a business and income stream. It’s not even just about creating online courses.
It’s creating online courses based on a very specific formula. It involves creating online courses based on a very specific formula. “The 3 Pillars” I’ll describe below. The other one has been built in “value leverage”You can now sell your course on your own platform for $200 (instead $19 on Udemy).
I’ve developed a blueprint process which melds marketing and course creation. This is the key difference: you don’t just create a course and hope for the best. That’s never going to work. But if you understand your target market, build a highly marketable course and then set up some automated selling systems, you’ve got a winner.
Continue reading to learn more about the components that make my online courses a success.
Why online courses are THE BEST business model
Online courses can help you take your expertise and make it valuable. That’s a great thing to do, highly profitable and highly satisfying. But that’s not the only advantage to this business model.
Here’s why else creating online courses kicks absolute ass:
The Suitcase Business
My online course results in a business that can fit into one suitcase. This business can be run entirely from a laptop. You don’t need office space, you aren’t tied to a specific location. You can also take your time and work from home because the course is online.
That means: lower costs, fewer complications and most importantly… freedom.
The Shoestring Budget Business
I LOVE bootstrapping. This means that you can start a business with minimal investment. It also reduces my risk. This is where online courses come in handy. On a budget, you can create an online course that is valuable, professional-presented and overall amazing.
You can even scale it to six figures without spending more than a few hundred bucks.
The Highly Scalable Business
Online courses are so profitable and scaleable. This means that selling 1,000 to 10,000 copies of an online course costs less than selling one copy. Online courses can provide a great income stream without the overhead costs or cumbersome processes.
The Little Known“Marketing Skills” Effect
Marketing skills are very valuable, especially when it comes to online marketing. I can’t tell you how many people want to hire me as a copywriter, marketer or coach, once they find out I know how to do actual, performance-Focused marketing. Well, here’s the thing: selling your own online course is deep, intense, real-World marketing. Your online course will teach you more about practical online marketing over 3 months than 3 years of reading marketing books and blogs. It’s learning-By-Do it to the limit!
The Better Known Learning-By-Teaching Effect
Your online course will focus on a topic you are passionate about. It’s you, turning your knowledge into a product. You also learn more. Teaching is a way to deepen your knowledge and understanding. In other words, if you’re an expert, creating an online course makes you more of an expert. If you’re an amateur, creating an online course turns you into an expert.
The Authority Effect
Consider any authority you can think of in any niche, market, or topic. You don’t need a magic 8 ball to guess that they’ve published at least one book.
An online course is not a book, but it has much of the same effect: people see you as an authority, when you’ve created a product. And this authority pays dividends in more ways than you’d expect. You won’t believe how much easier that makes it to get interviewed for shows, appear as a guest on podcasts, get invited to give talks at events…
The Online Course Business is Awesome… Unless…
Online courses offer the best, most affordable, and most flexible freedom.-Lifestyle business models are available. But that doesn’t mean creating just any old course is a sure-The key to success is in the fire.
Of course you can easily find people who’ve tried their hands at building an online course business and came out bitterly disappointed.
That’s because, quite frankly, most entrepreneurs who try this are going about it dead wrong and ass-backwards.
Let me break it down for you – let’s look at the typical mistakes that lead to online course business failure.
Tech Troubles
Online courses have many moving parts. It is easy to find more questions than answers once you get started.
How can I get paid?
What plugins or systems do I need to be a member? Which one is best?
What shopping cart system do you recommend?
How can I deliver my course to you?
How can I make my course content attractive and easy to understand?
Is it possible to stop people downloading my course and then sharing it on black-hat forums?
How do I automatically add my customers and build a mailinglist?
How do I connect my shopping basket to my mailing service?
It’s an endless rabbit hole of trying to make stuff work and uncovering 2 problems every time you solve 1.
The Platform Trap
Okay, let’s avoid the tech problems completely. That’s what online platforms like Udemy are for, right?
Unfortunately, while it is easier to start on a platform, once you’re in, you quickly realize that it’s a trap.
There are two types of platforms: the marketplace or the one that is used for business purposes. “tech only” platform.
Udemy is the marketplace. You get to create your course on someone else’s platform and all the payment processing, content restriction, course delivery and so on is taken care of. Only you have to create the content. That sounds great, right?
The Marketplace is trap #1
Udemy sellers are often concerned about how to get out of Udemy.
Why?
Because Udemy keeps most of the money made from sales that you don’t personally and directly refer. Udemy is theoretically a major advantage for sellers. Marketing is supposed be “built in” You get access to millions of users.
However, it is only the top 1% that really benefits from this. For the rest, it’s a battle to try and stand out in a marketplace flooded with products, all sold at dumping-prices. What choice do you have other than to compete on price? After all everyone’s course looks the same, everyone’s sales page looks the same. And worst of all: other courses are being advertised as alternatives whenever someone looks at your course’s sales page!
And speaking of prices: on Udemy, you don’t have much control over the price of your course. Courses are typically sold for $10 regardless of how expensive or detailed they may be. Udemy has the right not to give your permission for discounts and other special offers. You can end up selling 1,000 or more copies of your course without having made much money at all…
Trap #2 – The Hostage Situation
The second platform type is the “tech only” platform. No marketplace. It is all you get.-In-one system to host your course on someone else’s platform. However, you will still need to manage all marketing and advertising. You will have to pay a monthly fee. This can quickly cause a problem, especially if you aren’t getting sales right away. Unsurprisingly, this can be caused by placing your course on a third party.-party platform, you’ll often find that you want to do something and the answer is: sorry, we can’t do that. You can’t install a plugin to fix it, you can’t hire someone to custom-You can code a solution. You’re simply stuck. A platform. That’s costing you $100/month or more. Oh, and if you stop paying, your course, your customers, everything you’ve built – it all disappears from one moment to the next. It’s like they’re holding your work hostage.
See, I’m calling it a trap, because it is, in fact, a trap.
Greedy Money Grab
Some types of online marketing look at the “e” in their search.-Learn market and think “this is a great opportunity to make a quick buck!”
They put together some half.-Assed and unoriginal content is then created, then spent all their time making overhyped promises-The-Marketing material and sales copy for the world. They will try to convince people to pay them as much as possible for a poor product.
This could even work. Once.
Instead of building a foundation for a long-lasting, strong organization, it shattered.-term business, they realize that all bridges have been destroyed and have to find another way to squeeze more money.
Because your customers want to learn, an online course can be such a valuable business. Customers want more from a teacher who is good. There’s no faster way to build a loyal fan-It is more important to base products than to create top quality ones.
Thinking “all marketing, no substance” doesn’t lead to e-Learning how to make your business a success.
The “Diamond in the Rough” Course
Creating a course thinking only about the content that you — the expert — think people ought to learn is the exact opposite of the previous problem. It’s the equivalent of a boring, rambling lecture by a professor. A professor who’s surely brilliant – if we could only understand anything they’re saying.
Understanding how people think, feel, and need to create an online course that is successful is key. It is important to address their concerns, fears, and issues and to incorporate marketing into your products.
This is an important lesson for experts and creators: You need to create a product people want to buy, not just one that has a lot of information.
People don’t want information, they want solutions. And that’s why thinking “all substance, no marketing” It is also a recipe to fail.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, this is not about exploiting some “opportunity” You can make money doing as little work as you want. It’s not about throwing together some crappy copy-pasted content into a pretend “product” Using it to trick people into buying it. If you aren’t excited about creating a real, valuable, high-High quality products are then Course Craft isn’t for you.
Course Craft It is not just about creating a Course
A course created online is useless if it is done in isolation. You should only be focusing on the main points. “how do I structure a bunch of lessons into a course?” And “how do I take payments and deliver the course?” Yes, you do end up with a course. You also run into a problem. No one will purchase your course. Course Craft It is all about creating a marketable and sellable course, then selling it.
The Online Course Marketing + is the key to success Course Creation + Marketing
Yep, that’s right. Marketing is involved twice. That’s how important it is.
If you don’t do the, “course creation” part, you’re making an age old mistake of thinking “build it and they will come”. You’ll build your course, open it for sale and then… crickets.
Here’s why the formula is
Start with “Marketing”This is because you must know your market and the future customers. A marketable product is one that you have a clear understanding of. It must be something people actually want to purchase. This is why you must start building your entire course from day 1.
Next, you will need the “Course Creation” part to ensure you actually solve the problems you identified in your market and that you don’t just create any solution, but a high-Value, practical and actionable solutions that are well presented.
The second is what you will need. “Marketing” part to launch your product, using a proven system that uses ongoing, evergreen marketing so you’re not just sitting there, twiddling your thumbs and hoping that you’ll be blessed with sales from out of the blue.
This is the essence of a magnetically-soldable course: It has marketing and saleability. “baked in” It makes marketing for it so much easier. And at the same time, it’s a high-Quality, value and a product that delivers the desired result.
