What time can you really afford to lose?
Tom, a Residential Architect, shared with me a familiar tale about his attempt to learn SketchUp.
I kept hearing great things about SketchUp. SketchUp is a favorite tool for architects, and I decided it was time to give the program a shot.
I started out with the goal of being able to design homes using SketchUp and then create documents using LayOut.
Tom’s SketchUp Goal
“Everyone told me SketchUp was simple to use, so I downloaded it and started to model my house.
I was doing well until I ran into a problem when I tried to model the roof.
After struggling for a while with SketchUp, I looked online for some assistance and found a video tutorial.
I was able, following the tutorial, to get close to what I wanted. So I continued to model my home.
But, the pace of progress slowed down.
I found it more difficult to complete the model as I got closer and needed to search the internet to find a solution.
I reached a point in SketchUp where my model was almost complete. I thought, “Not bad for my first SketchUp project.”
However, the first time I used it on my job was quite different.
I had to complete the model by a certain deadline. When design changes were made, I had to be able SketchUp to create them.
I was way out of my mind.”

Tom’s emotional state
Tom’s situation is both extremely common and completely avoidable.
Alex Oliver, Founder & Lead Instructor
I’m Alex, the founder and lead instructor at SketchUp School. SketchUp has been taught online and in person for more than a decade. I’ve also taught SketchUp in the classroom to thousands.
We have developed and refined many classes for professionals over the past 10+ years.
Students who have learned SketchUp are a common occurrence in our advanced classes. Students who have never learned SketchUp will struggle to succeed in our advanced classes. This is because they are trying to improve their professional skills while starting from a weak base.
This is the biggest mistake people make when learning SketchUp.
You can avoid what happened to Tom by following the right approach.

What ever happened to Tom then?
Tom decided to take SketchUp seriously after getting into trouble with his first real project. That’s when he found SketchUp School, and saw we had a video course in our library that sounded perfect.
After he signed in, one of our instructors reached back to him and they had a discussion about what he wanted to learn and what experience he had using SketchUp.
Tom originally planned to take one of the advanced courses right away, but the instructor suggested that he review the lessons from our Intro to SketchUp course.
“This is such an amazing course – I’ve finally learned the right way to build a SketchUp model that’s organized and flexible to edit. Already, I’ve saved tons of time and headaches! I look forward to even more ways to expand my SketchUp arsenal. You have a good thing going for sure.”
Tom filled in all the gaps in SketchUp’s knowledge instead of spending his time on advanced courses. Tom was able to quickly get through the basics and jump into the course that caught his interest.
Tom now does all his SketchUp projects. It’s great!
